In Textile class, I learned about Shibori dye which is using natural indigo dye and folding fabrics to create different patterns. As an in-class activity, we made our own pattern and dyed fabrics or clothes that had stains. I wanted to dye other clothes at home and the professor let me borrow all the tools and a bucket full of leftover indigo dye.
I had a lot of nylon tube tops from my previous workplace and have been wanting to dye them someday because they had subtle yellowing on the sides. I spent my Saturday night, Sunday morning and afternoon, and Monday night to dye 30 tube tops and a white printed shirt with a stain.
It was the weekend before the photoshoot for Fashion Event. I thought I could have their photos taken and add to my original garment for Fashion Event because they fit the theme of sustainability. The tube tops were not sellable due to yellowing on the sides and I used leftover natural dye from in-class activity.
After photoshoot, one of the students from Promotion class wanted to buy some tube tops. Then the Promotion professor joined and they chose 4 designs and asked for the price. I looked up tube top prices online and only calculated for my time since I got the dye and tube tops for free
. I realized that seeing the tube tops on the dress form is very different from seeing them laying flat on the table. I plan on selling them on Etsy with flat photos and also model or mannequin photos.
